Dr. Jim Watson, and the team at Watson Orthodontics advise their patients near Katy, TX to wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment with Invisalign is complete. Wearing a retainer is an important step in orthodontic treatment to keep teeth straighter longer. Teeth have a tendency to drift back into their incorrect original positions, even after Invisalign, and a retainer will help patients maintain their healthy, attractive, hard-earned smiles, and keep their treatment goals intact for as long as possible.

Reversion

Teeth aren’t rigidly set into the jawbone, they’re held in place by a collection of fibers called periodontal ligaments. It will take some time after orthodontic treatment with Invisalign for the ligaments to adjust to your teeth’s new position, and wearing a retainer at night (while sleeping) is most effective as it will help keep your teeth in place as the ligaments adjust.

Retention

Retainers are available in several different forms including (but not limited to): removable retainers (made from colored acrylic that is molded to fit your mouth, and a metal wire that wraps around the teeth to help keep their new position), clear plastic retainers (similar to Invisalign, are made of thin, clear plastic, appear virtually invisible, and is molded to fit your teeth), and fixed retainers (consisting of a wire that is bonded to the back surface of the teeth, is an option for those who have a high risk of tooth movement or reversion).

Maintenance

We at Watson Orthodontics stress that patients keep their retainer in its case when not in use so it can’t be lost, and clean it with regularly with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Note that whitening toothpastes may scratch retainers made of plastic, instead use denture cleaner in tablet or powder form to effectively clean plastic or removable retainers. If you choose fixed retainers, conscientious brushing and flossing behind the teeth is required.

Here at Watson Orthodontics near Katy, TX, patients are often fitted for a retainer at the end of treatment with Invisalign. Once treatment is completed the teeth are cleaned thoroughly, bite impressions and X-rays may be taken to determine the success of the treatment, and this information is used to create a retainer that is created specially for the patient. If you are reaching the end of treatment with Invisalign and have any questions or concerns, contact us today!
